IRs boost tourists

TOURIST arrivals jumped to a new record in May, thanks in part to the two integrated resorts (IRs) fuelling visitors to Singapore, say travel experts.

The number of tourists shot up 30.3 per cent from a year ago, making it the highest ever recorded in the month of May, and for the sixth straight month running.

In raw numbers, 946,000 foreigners came here last month, up from 726,000 a year ago, said the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Monday. The bulk of the increase in arrivals came from Singapore?s top 15 visitor generating markets ? all but the UK sent more tourists this way.

Hong Kong tourists, the 11th largest market, posted the biggest jump - a 48.8 per cent leap to 32,000 arrivals. The number of Malaysians jumped 48.7 per cent, and for Taiwanese, it was up 47.4 per cent. Visitors from China also spiked by 38 per cent.

The rise in tourist arrivals has boosted occupancy at hotels and are sending rates north as well. Average occupancy rate is strong at 85 per cent, up 17.1 percentage points from last year, and hotel room revenue has soared 45.2 per cent from last year to hit $164 million.

For most of last year, the average room rate languished below $200. Last month, it reached $209, 13.4 per cent higher than in May last year.

Afterthoughts:

Since the 2 IRs launched their opening, tourist from around the world visited Singapore. This not only increaased revenue for the tourist industry in Singapore, it has also made Singapore into an international tourist attraction. Singapore has proven to the world that even though we are just a small nation compared to countries like U.S and China, but we can still be at the top in the various industries and attract as many tourist from around the world as possible.

Not only has the tourist industry improve, the aviation industry also improved. On the cargo front, Changi handled 153,098 tonnes of freight last month, 14.7 per cent more than in May last year. For the January to May period, total air freight volume hit 728,794 tonnes, up 17.3 per cent against last year. There was more activity on the tarmac too, with 22,151 take-offs and landings recorded, 12.4 per cent more than a year ago. This shows that the two IRs have indeed earned more revenue and helped Singapore recover from the economic crisis.

More desalination, NEWater

IN THE next 50 years, Singapore will dramatically ramp up its desalination and NEWater capacity in a bid to become self sufficient in its water supply. Over the next half century, the nation's water demand is projected to double from 380 million gallons per day (mgd) to 760 mgd.

Most of it will be met by the increased production of the reclaimed used water NEWater, and desalinated water. These two forms of water currently meet only 40 per cent of the country's water needs. By 2060, national water agency PUB aims to increase this proportion to 80 per cent, it announced on Monday evening at the Singapore International Water Week conference and trade show.

Singapore's two other sources of water are from catchment areas like reservoirs as well as imported water from Malaysia. The drive to produce more NEWater and desalinated water will enable Singapore to be self-sufficient in water by 2061, when its water agreement with Malaysia runs out. An earlier water agreement, signed in 1961 to allow Singapore to buy water from its neighbour at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons (about 1.3 Singapore cents), will run out next year (2011) and is not being renewed.

Besides desalination and reclaiming used water, the PUB will also increase Singapore's water catchment from the current two-thirds of land area to a whopping 90 per cent. It will tap even minor rivulets across the island and treat water there with variable salinity plants, which can treat fresh water and desalinate brackish water and saltier sea water.

Afterthoughts:
I think that Singapore Government is forwardlooking and always planning for the future. We should not rely on other countries for resources as one day, the countries may chose not to provide and share their resources with us. If the water contract with Malaysia expires, Singapore will not have to worry about its water resources with NEWater. By expanding on the water catchment area, Singapore will be able to store more water in its reservoirs and produce more NEWater. By producing our own supply of water, Singapore will never have to be in fear of a shortage of water. However, even with NEWater, we should not be complacent and waste water. We should make fulll use of each drop of water, t0 allow more generations to enjoy NEWater.

North Korea holding a meeting to elect a new leader

North Korea's ruling communist party is to hold a rare meeting of its political bureau, state media have said.

The session will be held in September to select new leaders for the Worker's Party of Korea (WPK), the North Korean Central News Agency said. Leader Kim Jong-il is believed to be in ill health and grooming his third son, Swiss educated Kim Jong-un, to succeed him.

WPK announced "we are now faced with the sacred tasks to develop the WPK... into an eternal glorious party of Kim Il-sung and further increase its militant function and role to glorify the country as a great prosperous and powerful socialist nation."

Earlier this week the director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service said that the 27 year years old is already taking a role in policy making and frequently accompanies his father on inspection tours.

Kim Jong-il is the de facto leader of North Korea

Kim Jong-un is the third son of Kim Jong-il, rumoured to be succeeding his father

Kim Il-sung is a Korean communist and politician who led North Korea from its founding in 1948 until his death. He was officially refers to as the "Great Leader" and designated in the constitution as the country's "Eternal President"
___________________________
Afterthought:
I am glad that the current president of North Korea is going to be changed, he is the leader of the country that opposes against many countries like United States of America, Germany, France and etc for their nuclear purposes, demanded unreasonable contracts with the United Nations (UN), sank a South Korea marine vessel, and many other misdeeds.

In 2008, he suffered from stroke which he did recovered, but letting such a person who has history of having stroke to lead a country is extremely dangerous as he might not be in a rational thought. With changing of president, i hope that his son would lead the country to a better future, different from his father, changing the country policy to people first instead of sticking with "Military-first" policy, open its country to more trade or capitalism, demolishing all its nuclear related materials, improve on the country's medical and education institute, build better infrastructure.

Studies in 2006 has shown that 7% kids in North Korea were severely malnourished, 37% chronically malnourished, 23.4% were underweight and one on three mothers was malnourished and anaemic as the result of the lingering effect of the famine. I hope positive changes will come from the new president of North Korea and stop relying on other countries like US and South Korea for food aid when they are capable enough of feeding their own citizens if they have direct their attention to citizen first instead of military.

Poland holding presidential election

Voting has begun in Poland's presidential elections, two months after a plane crash killed President Lech Kaczynski.

The late president's identical twin, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, and acting president Bronislaw Komorowski are among the 10 candidates. A run-off will be held if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote.Mr Kaczynski and 95 others died in the crash in Smolensk in western Russia on 10 April. The dead included many of Poland's political and military leaders, and the disaster has overshadowed the election campaign, making it one of the least aggressive ever.It has also boosted the ratings of the late president's twin, Jaroslaw, a combative conservative former prime minister who was voted out of office three years ago.

His personal loss has changed him, he says, and he is presenting himself as a man of compromise. But the front-runner is the government's candidate, Bronislaw Komorowski, who is a member of the governing Civic Platform party. The centre-right parliamentary speaker, who is now the acting president, says his whole career proves that he is a man who can unite the nation.

Lech Kaczynski was the President of Poland from 2005-2010, a politician of the party Law and Justice. He is the identical twin of Jaroslaw Kaczynski

Jaroslaw Kaczynski is a conservative Polish politician who was a prime minister from July 2006 to November 2007. Currently the chairman of Law and Justice party, which he co-founded in 2002. He is the identical twin of Lech Kaczynski

Bronislaw Komorowski is the current acting President of Poland

_______________________________________

_______________________________________
Afterthought:
It is unfortunate that Polish president and other senior officials has died in a plane crash accident, but i am glad that the country's ministers were able to take care of the situation fast, efficient and with minimum public being panic. They were able to appoint an acting president in such a short notice and also held a presidential vote.

However, political corruption will always present here or in any other country, the system they have set up might help the country to find a president fast but it causes an unfair play to other candidates. The ruling part is using all resources like media to present its agenda, using corruptive method to fight its opponent, public are being manipulated, given biased information, discrediting opposition party.

Heavy rains issues in Myanmar and Singapore

MYANMAR

YANGON - At least 46 people have died in landslides triggered by heavy rain in western Myanmar near the border with Bangladesh, state media reported on Thursday.

Bridges, homes and other buildings were damaged after record rainfall of more than 13 inches (33 centimetres) Wednesday in parts of Rakhine State, the New Light of Myanmar newspaper said.

The landslides swept away huts on hillsides. Some areas have seen floods as high as two feet (60 centimetres) after several days of torrential rain, the report said.

Landslides caused by heavy rains are not uncommon in Myanmar owing to deforestation.

Across the border in southeastern Bangladesh, at least 55 people have been killed and thousands more left homeless after the heaviest rain in decades triggered flash floods and landslides, according to police there.

The hardest-hit area, Teknaf, is home to hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

SINGAPORE

SINGAPORE: Flash floods caused by heavy rain on Wednesday morning left a trail of damage and disruption in parts of Singapore.

In just three hours, between 8am and 11am, 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded. That is 60 per cent of the average rainful for June.

Hardest hit were the downtown areas, as businesses came to a halt, people scrambled for a way out, and the authorities swung into damage control.

Business at a cafe in Liat Towers in Orchard Road ground to a halt. Motorists and commuters are stuck in traffic in Thomson, while part of the CTE had to be closed for about two hours due to a fallen tree.

Bus services were disrupted for a few hours, from about 10am to 1pm.

The hardest hit was Orchard Road, as viewers sent in pictures of the early scenes when the skies opened. One showed the intersection between Orchard and Scotts Roads made it impassable for vehicles and pedestrians.

And those who were caught in the downpour did not expect it to be so serious.

Singapore's national water agency PUB maintains that its drainage systems are developed for Singapore's rapid urbanisation.

Yap Kheng Guan, 3P Network Director, PUB, said: "In 1984, when we expanded the Stamford Canal, it served this area and served us very well. So we have to really get down to this root of today's flooding."

He added: "You have to look at the nature of the flooding that has taken place. You compare it with the previous years, where we have 2,000 hectares of flooding. Now it's 66 hectares.

"There are still areas that will be subjected to floods. But the nature of the flood is very different from the previous flood. In the past, it used to be very extensive, and for a longer duration, and the depth of the water is a lot of worse. And those floods can be very disruptive and disabling.

The PUB said it will investigate the cause of the flood. But before that, the debris and water will have to be cleared from the drainage system.

Older buildings like Lucky Plaza will have to be cleared of the flood water. However underground, MRT trains did not see an extra flow of passengers or rainwater. That is because the PUB had advised the operator to ensure that the stations are flood-resistant.

A flight of stairs can prevent rainwater from overflowing into MRT stations underground.

PUB said such anti-flooding features are being built into MRT stations based on the highest flooding level ever recorded in the past 20 to 30 years.

Afterthoughts

There have been quite a number of issues regarding heavy rains around the world. Above two articles stated are just two of them. Landslides happened due to the heavy rain and caused at least 46 deaths. Lots of damages are done to the surroundings. As for Myanmar, heavy rains are often seen as deforestation occurs every now and then.

However, Singapore experienced floods too and it has received lots of unexpected reactions from the locals. Hardest hits are the downtown areas, thus businesses are badly affected too. Traffic jams are unavoidable due to this.

Nobody would think of such a heavy downpour would result in such tragedies in Mynamar. We,Singaporeans should not take this incident lightly. In conclusion, we ought to reflect on our own actions which might be part of cause caused.

Kyrgyzstan Conflict

June 11 2010, clashes took place between the two main Kyrgyz ethnic groups – the Uzbeks and the Kyrgyz people – in the second largest city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Mobs of armed men torched Uzbek neighborhoods in Kyrgyzstan on Friday in ethnic clashes that officials said left at least 45 people dead and 637 wounded in a Central Asian nation. To date, the death toll had increase to 117, and more than 1,485 wounded.

In Osh, dozens of buildings were ablaze Friday after sustained gunfire that began late Thursday, and the interim government declared a state of emergency in the city and surrounding areas. The intensity of the conflict, which pits ethnic Kyrgyz against minority Uzbeks, appeared to take authorities by surprise. Rumours claim that Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the former president who was ousted in April, have been orchestrating a campaign of ethnic conflict along with his supporters. Michael Andersen, a Danish film maker who has been living in Osh, said "it's very likely that Bakiyev and his cronies are behind this". "I lived in Osh for several years and when you live there, you don't feel any everyday tension between Uzbeks and the Kyrgyz, this is clearly something that is constructed and provoked by some third party." he told Al Jazeera, an Arabic-language news network based in Qatar. According to local sources, there was a ruffle between two local gangs and it didn’t take long for the violence to spread over to the rest of the city. There were also reports of the law enforcement officials supporting the ethnic Kyrgyz gangs but the government denied any such allegations.

The interim government has sought Russia's help to quell the violence, but the Russian government has declined the request to send military assistance. As it is an internal conflict and for now Russia does not see the conditions for taking part in its resolution, however, Russia would be sending humanitarian aid to the troubled nation. To control the situation, Kyrgyzstan ordered the partial mobilisation of the army after nearly three days of deadly clashes and gave police and army authorisation to shoot to kill on any groups using firearms. This order however failed to stop the violence.

Officials in neighbouring Uzbekistan said tens of thousands of Uzbek refugees from Kyrgyzstan had fled across the border into Uzbekistan to escape the violence. Witnesses said the Uzbeks fled Kyrgyzstan in panic after their homes were torched by roving mobs of Kyrgyz men. Some Uzbek women and children were gunned down as they tried to escape. One elderly refugee said despite despite a curfew and state of emergency imposed by the Krygyz interim government. The Kyrgyz forces came and informed them about the curfew, and let armed gangs set fire to their houses and killing everyone while they were all in the houses. Another refugee said people were shooting at them when they fled their house after it was set on fire. And her attackers were using guns mounted on an armed personnel carrier.

On June 14, corpses burnt almost beyond recognition lay in the streets of Uzbek neighborhoods. Naked, mutilated bodies of two ethnic Uzbek women killed in Osh had been pulled out of the river on the Uzbekistan side. These had led to the increasing fear that the death toll will soar even higher.

Afterthoughts

The Thailand Political Crisis, Sinking of Cheonan Incident, Gaza Flotilla Raid. And now this, the Kyrgyzstan Unrest. Seems to me, there is an raise in groups of people wanting to flex their muscles for a purpose, but with the wrong method. We must all understand the fact of which through violence, will hatred and vengenence grow. Hence, starting a endless spiral of suffering. And personally, that is not the way to victory.

According to reports, the cause of the riots in Kyrgyzstan is still unknown. Although, Uzbek witnesses said that the Kyrgz starting kill Uzbeks indiscriminately. It is still a one sided story, as no one had heard of any account of a Kyrgz.

If the statements of every witness are true and not exaggerated, then the actions of the Kyrgz are truly disgusting. Not only had they burnt down houses, they opened fire at the old and the women, even the women who are pregnant were not spared. What's worse, despicable officials lied to the Uzbeks to stay at home for the curfew, and let the mob set their house ablaze and shoot them as they make their escape.

Unfortunately, it is an issue which foreign countries can play no part in. And hopefully, it will not escalate to the stage where Russia is forced to exert necessary force to protect her people. If that happens, the death toll will sure to rise even higher.

India Heatwave that caused at least 20 deaths

INDIA : A severe heat wave in India has already claimed several lives, and is disrupting normal life and business. At many places, the temperatures have broken records for the month of May, and are inching closer to an unprecedented 50 degrees Celsius.

Shimla in the hills of north India is a favorite getaway for those living on the hot and humid plains. But this year, even the so-called Queen of Hills is experiencing sweltering heat. The roads are deserted, as residents unused to such heat, stayed indoors.

"We have never seen the temperature crossing 27 to 28 degrees (Celsius), but this time it has crossed 30 degrees, so it is a very unexpected. It has never happened before," said Ashok Kureja, a resident at Shimala.

In western Ahmedabad city, hundreds have fallen ill due to the heat and dehydration. There is a severe water shortage as rivers are drying up.At least 20 people have died and scores have been hospitalised due to heat stroke.

"Around 350 patients have been admitted till now because of heat wave and around 20 people have died. Mainly those people suffering from diabetes and blood pressure are the victims," said Mayur Dave, spokesperson of Vadilal Sarabhai Hospital.

According to meteorological officials, the lack of thunderstorm activity that precedes the monsoon showers, could be the reason that temperatures are four to five degrees above the norm. People are eagerly awaiting the onset of the monsoon season.

Last year the country faced the driest monsoon season in nearly four decades. This year, the rains are predicted to be at normal levels. The summer rains which run from June to September will not only cool the sub-continent but also bring respite to the government trying to battle burgeoning prices because of last year's drought.

Views: This heatwave is an environmental, serious temperature issue in India. The temperature is around 50 degree Celsius, which is totally hard for anyone to withstand. Many fall sick were partially because of the drastic weather which they can't adapt, causing at least 20 deaths. Severe water shortage as rivers are drying up.

I pity them, nevertheless, weather and temperature are unpredictable. Drought could be one of the factor that contributes to the extremely hot weather. Majority of the residents stayed indoor because of this matter. Many are waiting for the monsoon session to be here, so that they can enjoy and get rid of the humid heat. I hope that those staying in India will take great care and hydrate themselves now and then. Thus to prevent tragedy things to happen.

From this news, i can see that weather is unpredictable .Sometimes, the weather can be too hot or too cold. I shall learn not to complain anymore as out there people are suffering because of weather.

Germany's president resigned

MOST fallen leaders are remembered for what brought them down. Horst Köhler will be remembered for the downfall itself. On May 31st he resigned as Germany’s president, saying that critics of accusation of him violating the spirit of the constitution and remarks he made about military deployments failed to show “the necessary respect for my office.” He left Schloss Bellevue, his official workplace, on the spot, without waiting the 30 days needed to name a successor.

Although the German president has few real powers, Mr
Köhler’s sudden departure caused a bombshell in germany, piling additional pressure on coalition government led by Angela Merkel, which is already beleaguered by sagging popular support and the crisis of Euro area. He was selected for presidency in 2004 by Mrs Angela Merkel and the FDP’s chief, Guido Westerwelle. A civil servant who became head of the International Monetary Fund, Mr Köhler possessed neither political wiles nor oratorical brilliance. He was popular with ordinary Germans, but did not inspire them as some earlier presidents had done.

His final undoing was an interview he gave on returning from his first visit to Afghanistan. A country “of our size and with our export orientation” must sometimes deploy troops to protect its economic interests, for example open trade routes he said. For many Germans, who oppose foreign military expeditions on any grounds, this smacked of gunboat diplomacy. Some accused the president of contradicting the constitution, which forbids Germany from going to war alone.

Federal and state representatives are to be gathered for Federal assembly on 30th june to elect a new president.
__________________________
Horst Köhler was President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 1998 to 2000 and head of the International Monetary Fund(IMF) from 2000 to 2004 before elected as President of Germany from 2004 to 2010.
Angela Merkel is the current chancellor of Germany. She has been the chairman of Christian Democratic Union, UDC, since 10 april 2000 and chairman of the Christian Social Union, CSU, parliementary coalition from 2002 to 2005
Guido Westerwelle is a German liberal politician, currently serving as foreign prime minister and has been the chairman of the Free Democratic Party of Germany
__________________________
Germany President's resignation
__________________________
After Thoughts:
Even though the public criticise on the president's decision on the military deployment, i personally don't think that should be enough to cause the president to resign from its post. After all, the moment he chose to become the candidate of the next president, he should know and be prepared to situation like public outcries, protests, criticism and other problematic issues. No matter how badly the public criticise, a president who vow to govern and rule the country to stability, prosperity and harmony should never quit.

Fortunately, there're chancellors or prime ministers of Germany that could still help to stabilize the country and keep the citizens from being panic or chaotic as they have lost the head of the country. I hope they could soon find a better replacement for the presidency.

Aussie restaurant uses iPads for menus

SYDNEY : An Australian restaurant has ditched printed menus and now hands diners the latest tech-craze, Apple's touch-screen iPad computer, from which to choose and order their meals.

Risking damaging wine spills and customers taking an iPad 'to go', the Global Mundo Tapas eatery at the Rydges Hotel in North Sydney introduced its new menus three days ago -- within a week of the iPad's Australian release.

"One of the points of difference for our restaurant was to have a unique menu," the hotel's general manager Craig Simpson said Friday.Hundreds of people queued round the block in central Sydney to buy the iPad when it went on sale outside the United States for the first time on May 28.

Simpson bought 15 of the sought-after tablets, flying to Adelaide to pick up 10 of them on launch day, which retail from AUS$629 Australian dollars (US$531).

An iPad application developed ahead of the tactile device's launch allows diners at the 50-seat restaurant to browse the menu -- complete with photographs and tasting notes -- with a flick of a finger.

Order a steak and the application asks how you would like the meat cooked, and placing your order can be done with the press of a button. Planned features include pop-up boxes that will suggest wines to match meals, and stock-control mechanisms to delete sold-out items from the menu.

"Hotels used to be cutting-edge food and beverage," Simpson said. "We are trying to bring the pizzazz back."

"It's something to play with while you order," he said. "With a menu, you don't really know what you're getting," lunch customer David Wisemantel told AFP on Friday. "I would be far more inclined to order... if I knew what it looked like."

Views:
The globe is constantly spinning , advanced technology are created now and then. Personally, i think that the houses, tourist attractions and all stuff around us are always changing to satisfy human unwanted satisfaction. Technology is just another factor too. I'm totally amazed and awed by the changes in this particular place. In Sydney, there is a Aussie restaurant which changed the whole concept of menus. This act of their was totally brillant and innovative.

Apparently, they used Apple iPads for their menus. This allows people to play while they order their foods. Interesting way to order their food and pop up button to recommend them which wines to go with.

Fast, easy and appealing are the 3 simple words i would describe.

Firstly, FAST as to the customers don't have to wait for the waiters to attend to others before serving them . They have the iPads to take their orders.

Secondly, EASY as to the iPads will delete those sold out items just to inform the customers before they make their decisions. Nevertheless, it is light and just a flick of a finger, their orders can be make known.

Lastly, APPEALING as to there are photographs of what the food looks like. Though normal menus have pictures too, their might not look as appealing to those food on the iPads, the more advanced technology.

An innovaative and useful tool for menus such as Apple iPads is indeed brillant.

The Gaza flotilla raid

They said we were terrorists – it was absurd. They came into the part where the women were, lots and lots of them, dressed in black and with gigantic weapons as if they were in a war. They confiscated all of our telephones and all of our luggage and took everything out of the bags and put it on the floor." said Iara Lee, a Brazilian filmmaker and survivor of the Israeli assault, who was on the Mavi Marmara. The main ship of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla Convoy.

On 1st June 2010, the Gaza flotilla raid took place in the Mediterranean Sea in International waters. The assault began at 4.30am as the convoy was heading to Gaza refused to change course and head away from the Gaza coast with an attempt to deliver its cargo of aid. According to a spokeswoman for the Israeli defence force (IDF), Avital Leibovich, officers aboard its warships gave the activists several warnings before commandos were winched from helicopters on to the deck of the Mavi Marmara. At least nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed as Israeli naval commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara. Dozens more were wounded and evacuated by helicopter to Israeli hospitals.

Both parties gave different statements of the raid, Turkish activist Nilufer Cetin said Israeli troops opened fire before boarding the Turkish-flagged ferry Mavi Marmara, while on the other hand. Israeli officials said that the use of armed force began when its boarding party was attacked. When about 10 activists had attacked commandos, taking their pistols.

The attack prompted widespread international reactions from national authorities, supranational bodies and NGOs, as well as civilian demonstrations around the world. The United Nations Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council condemned "those acts resulting in civilian deaths", demanded an impartial investigation of the raid, and called for the immediate release of civilians held by Israel. Israel responded that it would release 620 of the 682 arrested people, and deport them back to their countries.

Afterthoughts

The IDF should not have resort to lethal force even if its boarding party has been attacked. This mistake had led to the lost of innocent lives. Kind souls whose goal of the trip is only for goodwill.

From the statement given by both parties, I feel that the IDF is simply trying to cover up their mistake by pushing the blame to the activists. From a logical point of view, would activists carry a wide range of arsenal in its attempt of providing aid. The Mavi Marmara is also known for its intention of bringing in humanitarian aid. Hence, the use for lethal force is way over the top.

According to Israeli sources, the IDF boarded the ships after the flotilla refused calls to change course and head away from Gaza. If this statement is true, the activists will have to be responsible for this tragedy as well. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. None of this would have happened if they had complied in the first place.

Like the Sinking of Cheonan incident, this event will be watched by the world.

North Korea rejects evidence

Portion of the sunken South Korean naval ship Cheonan is salvaged off Baengnyeong Island, South Korea. An explosion from a N.Korean torpedo left 46 sailors dead.
A part of the sunken South Korean naval vessel Cheonan is lifted by a giant crane off Baengnyeong island.

South Korean Navy's Ship Salvage Unit members on rubber boats return from search for survivors from the sunken South Korean navy ship near South Korea's Baengnyeong Island.
South Korean artillery soldiers take positions during an exercise against possible North Korean attacks, in Paju, north of Seoul, South Korea, near the DMZ between the two Koreas. South Korea resumed propaganda broadcasts into North Korea in response to a deadly torpedo attack that sank a South Korean warship, officials said on Tuesday, amid a report that North Korea's leader ordered troops to be ready for combat.
South Korean K1 tanks conduct an exercise to prepare for a possible surprise attack by North Korea, near the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas in Yeoncheon, South Korea.
South Korean soldiers patrol along the military fence near the DMZ separating South Korea from North Korea in Yanggu. South Korean President Lee Myung Bak said North Korea would pay the price for sinking a South Korean naval ship and that the South would invoke its right to defend itself if Pyongyang waged aggression again.

SEOUL - NORTH Korea has flatly rejected evidence showing it torpedoed a South Korean warship with the loss of 46 lives, saying it does not own a midget submarine allegedly used for the March attack.

The North's powerful National Defence Commission (NDC), chaired by leader Kim Jong Il, held a rare press conference on Friday and denied Pyongyang's involvement, according to official North Korean media.

Major General Pak Rim Su, director of the policy department of the NDC, said the North does not have a 130-tonne 'Salmon-class' submarine, which the South says torpedoed its 1,200-ton corvette, the Cheonan, in the Yellow Sea. 'We don't have anything like a 130-tonne Salmon-class submersible,' Gen Pak was quoted by Pyongyang's Chungang TV as telling reporters. A multinational investigation led by Seoul concluded earlier this month that the March 26 sinking was caused by a torpedo attack from the North. South Korean investigators said a Salmon-class midget submarine had intruded into South Korean waters via international waters.

But Gen Pak said: 'It does not make any sense militarily that a 130-tonne submersible carrying a heavy 1.7-tonne torpedo travelled through the open sea into the South, sank the ship and returned home.' He also rebutted Seoul's allegation that salvaged fragments of the torpedo matched design specifications that appeared on brochures the North allegedly sent to an unidentified potential buyer of North Korean torpedoes.

'Who in the the world would hand over torpedo designs while selling torpedoes?' he said. Senior Colonel Ri Son Gwon dismissed as a 'fabrication' a serial number hand-written on a torpedo fragment reading '1 bun' or number one. South Korea said the serial number handwritten in Korean was strong evidence of Pyongyang's involvement in the sinking.

'When we put serial numbers on weapons, we engrave them with machines,' Col Ri said. 'We use 'bun' only for football or basketball players,' he said. Col Ri said the blame for the incident rested with the 'commander-in-chief of the puppet armed forces and military bosses'. Gen Pak said the Seoul-led multinational investigation team was not in a position to conduct an objective probe, attacking Seoul for rejecting Pyongyang's demand that it will dispatch its own investigation team.

Species Extinction

Modern science has shown that nature is not always “red in tooth and claw”, but rather that cooperation is often the norm. Human beings often act as if we are in direct competition with every other form of life, when in truth our very survival depends on a myriad of species from simple bacteria to complex mammals.

Today, human activities are causing a massive extinction of species, the full implications of which are barely understood. Rising ocean temperatures reduce the ability of plankton to reproduce, thereby undermining the entire oceanic ecosystem. Commercial fishing’s increasing size and scope threaten to empty of the ocean of fish within several decades.

Modern agricultural practices strip the Earth of its thin layer of topsoil through water and wind erosion, destroying this precious micro ecosystem that takes centuries to form and supports all life on land. Furthermore, bee populations are plummeting as a result of mite infestations and a mysterious problem called Colony Collapse Disorder. Over 70% of our food is pollinated by bees; if bee populations fall too far, our food supplies will be seriously threatened. . .

Around the world, habitats are being destroyed at an alarming rate, putting many wildlife species in danger of extinction. Threatened and endangered wildlife live in throughout the globe and you're likely to find some in your own backyard. To protect endangered animals, think both globally and locally.
