An upcoming war?

March 2010, reports suggested that South Korean Navy units shot at an unidentified ship heading towards North Korea. But was later claimed that the target may have been a flock of birds that were misidentified on radar by a defense official.

Weeks later, a South Korean Navy ship, the Cheonan, broke in two and sank
in waters off the country's west coast near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea after a mysterious explosion. Leaving 46 causalities out of the 104 men crew.

Speculations that a submarine could have torpedoed the ship, and the presence a North Korean submarine was spotted near the site of the sinking by South Korean and American intelligence agencies. However was dismissed by Defence ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae, stating that no "extraordinary activities" had been confirmed.

On 19 May 2010, a team of investigators from Sweden, Australia, Britain, and the United States found a fragment of metal containing a serial number similar to one on a North Korean torpedo was identical to a North Korean torpedo previously captured by South Korea. Confirming that it was indeed a North Korean torpedo sank the ship.

The situation worsens when North Korea demands that the South must receive Pyongyang investigators and show them evidence that the North torpedoed a South Korean warship, killing 46 sailors. As the NDC (National Defence Commission) claims the report was based on fabrication. However, the request was reject by South Korean Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young, saying it would be 'like a robber or a murderer insisting he must inspect the crime scene'.

Since then North Korea start severing all ties with South Korea and cutting communications links, expel all South Korean personnel from a jointly-run industrial estate at Kaesong north of the border, and ban South Korean ships and planes from its territorial waters and airspace. in protest at claims that it had torpedoed one of Seoul's warships. South Korea announced a package of reprisals, including a halt in most trade and plans to refer the sinking to the United Nations Security Council.

Afterthoughts
This incident has indeed worsen the ties between the two nations, any mistake made in the process of resolving this matter. May spark an armed conflict, or worse, a possible Nuclear War, either which it will inevitably lead a bloodbath at an uncountable count of lives.

The future of Asia will be deeply affected by this matter, as the stability of the region's economy and diplomatic ties will change regardless which direction the situation shifts to.

The decision of severing all ties with South Korea by North Korea is rather odd, as South Korea is one of the growing economies in the world. By severing ties, would also mean there will no longer be any trade between the two nations. With its ongoing poverty and famine issues, it is not a rational decision.
