New Water
![]() ![]() NEWater is the brand name given to reclaimed water produced by Singapore's public utilities. More specifically, it is treated wastewater (sewage) that has been purified using dual-membrane and ultraviolet technologies, in addition to conventional water treatment processes. There are four NEWater factories, located at the Bedok, Kranji, and Seletar, and Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plants, producing about 32 million US gallons per day (1.4 m³/s). These four NEWater plants can meet 15 % of Singapore's water needs. Some of the NEWater is used at wafer fabrication plants and other non-potable applications in industries. The rest is fed into nearby reservoirs. The fifth NEWater plant recently opened at Changi in the beginning of this year. With a capacity of 50 million gallons per day, NEWater is currently able to meet 30% of Singapore's water requirements through recycling. From my point of view, it's good that Singapore has water self-sufficiency by 2061. Shows that we do not have to depend on Malaysia on water because if rainy days we have our own back up. This is due to whenever there were serious bilateral disagreements, some Malaysian politicians would use water as leverage to pressure us to compromise in their favour. Moreover, most of the rivers in malaysia are polluted with industrial and agricultural chemicals. For example, Selangor state is facing water shortages and has to get it's supply of water from Pahang with a multi-billion dollar project to drill a tunnel through the Titiwangsa Mountain range. All this things that happened, we had to look through and be more independent. From reasearch, by 2061 Johor might be short of water and would not be able to supply singapore with their water.
