Counter-terrorism in Indonesia

On May 12th and 13th counter-terrorism police staged a series of raids around Java, killing five terrorist suspects and detaining 20 others. The police say the group was plotting to assassinate high-ranking officials, including the president himself.

In a televised appeal to the nation on May 17th Mr Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia, declared that the captured terrorists were inclined in building an Islamic state, something that is now history for Indonesia. Their group, a splinter cell of South-East Asia’s Jemaah Islamiah network (J.I.), would also like to put paid to Indonesia’s fledgeling democracy. But it was Mr Yudhoyono’s words about Islam and its place in Indonesia that drew attention, to change the country’s constitution which favoured the Islamic, he said, would be “unacceptable to Indonesians”.

Indonesia’s founding fathers rejected establishing an Islamic state back in 1945, because the country’s small but influential minorities, including Christians, Hindus and Buddhists, has suggested that the only way to keep the republic together is to avoid giving one religion privileges at the expense of others. But no national leader has dared to say it. Had Mr Yudhoyono made the point when he first campaigned for the presidency in 2004, his opponents would have pin-point him as an un-Islamic candidate. E.g. At times Mr Yudhoyono has refrained from uttering the group’s name because “Jemaah Islamiah” means “Islamic community” which he feared might anger voters by associating Islam with terrorism.

Mr Yudhoyono’s former diffidence makes his new posture all the more striking. A counter-terrorism official says it does not stem from the president’s anger at having been a target himself. It is the terrorists’ ultimate aims that offend him, to make Indonesia an Islamic country which, ultimately, defeats democracy that the founding fathers has built. He mentioned in his speech that the terrorists are expanding their range of targets to include ordinary Indonesian citizens, not just foreigners and himself.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is a retired Indonesian Army general officer and the current President of Indonesia since 2004

Jemaah Islamiah (J.I.) is a Southeast Asianmilitant Islamic organization dedicated to the establishment of a Daulah Islamiya

My thoughts: It is good that the president finally decides to take an action that will show real tangible result against terrorism, which past presidents have failed to tackled down or mitigate the problem. An example would be ex-president Megawati Sukarnoputri. As an Indonesian, i feel lucky to have such man as president to guide the nation towards the right direction, by thinking in a more equitable or fair-mindedness. Instead of just focusing in the Muslim religion as i feel that every people in Indonesia regardless of race and religion deserves the same treatment and benefits.

As a third party observer, I believe that current president should strengthen and send more troops to patrol major cities and famous tourist spots like Bali as to prevent the "Bali-bombing incident" from ever happening again. Reason why I believed is that we need to show to the citizens and foreigners that Indonesian army can protect the country from real terrorist threats, to build an identity whereby safety concern is no longer an issue, as it can cause irreversible harm, conflicts between religion and races as all these terror attacks by terrorists are to enforce Muslim state and inflict huge negative impact on economy
